Location: Our location is about as
good as it gets - close enough to the center of town that a short walk
on level ground takes you to most destinations, far enough from the core
to avoid the crowds, the traffic and the noise.
Some examples of downtown attractions
that are a flat walk from our front door -
4 minutes to the covered farmer's/artisan's market, 6 minutes to the
Biblioteca Publica, 10 minutes to the Jardin Principal (centre of town),
and 7 minutes to
Fabrica,
(an old textile
mill converted to studios, galleries and shops).
At the same time, because the
house is situated next to
El Charco del Ingenio (San Miguel’s
nature preserve), the air is fresh, the view is magnificent and you can
be hiking in a wilderness setting surrounded by high cliffs and giant
cactus, again in a matter of minutes. |

The House: built brand new in 2003, in a style that is modern with Mexican influences, the house is oriented to the garden and to the views of the verdant green hillside and the ancient dam in the nature reserve. While the front of the house has definite 'curb appeal', the emphasis is on the private open spaces at the rear of the house that face the garden and the park - the large covered terrace on the ground level, the covered balcony on the second level, and the accessible rooftop. Weather permitting, you are likely to be relaxing in one of these outside spaces, rather than staying inside. Even when you go inside, what separates you from the outside is glass, glass and more glass. The office/library, with its eight feet of desk and many books, is essentially a sun room with oversize windows on two sides. The second floor master bedroom (queen size bed) looks out on the balcony through floor-to-ceiling glass walls, and the kitchen has both an oversize window, and a glass door leading to the balcony. So wherever you are, in any of these rooms, you enjoy the same vistas. Even the first floor bedroom (double bed) has one wall that is mostly glass, with a view of the garden. The natural light pouring in through all this glass at the rear of the house is then supplemented by more light coming in through the very large window at the front of the house (visible in the street view photo), and the large circular skylight above the staircase. To top it off, there are two additional skylights located midway between the front and rear of the house, bringing light into the heart of the upper level. Lots of natural light does NOT mean you have to deal with direct sun. The first floor terrace and the second floor balcony both have roofs that shelter you from the heat and glare of direct sun. However, if direct sun is what you want, it is available on the rooftop, accessible by wide concrete steps leading up from the garden. Sunbathe on the roof while enjoying panoramic views of the town and the nature reserve. |
Miscellaneous Information: The kitchen is equipped with a high end 6 burner Bosch gas range (powered by propane), a refrigerator and lots of counter space. There are two bedrooms, each with its own en suite bathroom (one with shower stall, one with a soaker tub + shower), plus a powder room off the living room. The second floor balcony serves as an outdoor dining room and holds a table and chairs. There is a one car garage with an automatic door opener, and a laundry room with a washer and a dryer. |
The Owners: we are psychotherapists in private practice in Toronto, Canada. In 2007 we spent ten glorious days in San Miguel and, like so many others before us, fell in love with the town, its culture and its people (about 130,000 Mexicans and 10,000 ex pats, mainly from the US and Canada). We returned to San Miguel for January and February of 2011, and to everyone's surprise (including our own) made the decision to buy. For more information about us, click here. |
